– The American Livestock Breeds Conservancy is a
clearing-house for information on livestock and genetic

changed. Modern food production now favors the use of a few

have lost popularity and are threatened with extinction. These
traditional breeds are an essential part of the American
agricultural inheritance. Not only do they evoke our past, they
are also an important resource for our future. The
American Livestock Breeds Conservancy, founded in 1977, is the
only organization in the U.S. working to conserve rare breeds
and genetic diversity in livestock.

consistent with BLM's multiple use mission which takes into

and other users such as livestock & recreationists. With the
passage of the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971,
the primary responsibilities of the BLM are to preserve and
protect wild horses and burros and to manage for healthy
rangelands. When an over-population of wild horses and burros
exists on the range, the excess animals are removed and offered
to the general public for adoption.
